Kintraw Standing Stone

Located in a field next to a bend in the A816 road, the Kintraw Standing Stone lies to the southeast of the settlement of Kintraw and 3¾ miles (6 km) north of Kilmartin. dating from the Bronze Age (c. 1800 BC), the stone stands 4m (13 feet in height and lies next to a large burial cairn which has been much-quarried for its stone. Other smaller burial cairns lie nearby. It has been suggested that the stone marked a position for viewing the setting sun over mountains on the island of Jura at the winter solstice. The stone was leaning badly and finally fell in 1979. It was re-erected with its base set in concrete, although its alignment is unfortunately different. The cairn was excavated in 1959-60 and found to contain a cist.
