Fife College

(Glenrothes Technical College; Adam Smith College; Carnegie College)

Fife College is a further education establishment headquartered in Pitteuchar (Glenrothes, Fife). It came about as a merger in 2013 between Adam Smith College, Carnegie College (Dunfermline) and the non-land based elements of Elmwood College in Cupar. The Adam Smith College was itself the result of a 2005 merger between Glenrothes College (originally Glenrothes Technical College) and Fife College of Further and Higher Education. This earlier Fife College was founded in 1929 as Kirkcaldy Technical School. It became the principal centre for further education courses in Fife as Fife College in 1974 and, after broadening its course base and adding a number of degrees courses, became Fife College of Further and Higher Education in 1993. Buckhaven Mining School was established in 1926 and became Buckhaven Technical College in 1952. The Glenrothes Technical College was opened in 1968 by Fife Council and a merger in 1973 created Glenrothes and Buckhaven Technical College. On its foundation, Adam Smith College took the honour of appointing Scotland's first ever College Chancellor, Gordon Brown MP (b.1951). Carnegie College was founded as Lauder College in 1899, with the support of the Scottish-American industrialist George Lauder (1837 - 1924).

Fife College now has 26,000 students (2015) with campuses at Cupar, Dunfermline (Halbeath), Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy (St. Brycedale), Leven and Rosyth, together with local learning centres at Anstruther, Bowhill, Cowdenbeath, Dunfermline (Tryst Centre), Glenrothes (Auchmuty and Saltire Centre), High Valleyfield, Kirkcaldy (Ravenscraig and Templehall), Methil, Rosyth (Parkgate and Robert Purvis House) and St Andrews. The Priory Campus in Kirkcaldy was vacated in 2016.
