Mosswater Local Nature Reserve

Mosswater Local Nature Reserve is located on the western margin of Cumbernauld in North Lanarkshire, to the north of Blackwood and the west of Smithstone. Extending to 23.75 ha (59 acres) and formally designated in 2014, this was Scotland's 70th Local Nature Reserve. It comprises young woodland and floodplain grassland lying alongside the Moss Water. The area has been improved by the creation of ponds, deep-flooded ditches to appeal to water voles and the provision of nesting boxes to attract barn owls. The larger ponds have shallow muddy edges to attract waterfowl and wading birds, while the smaller ponds provide a habitat for frogs and newts. A path network was built in 2012 leading to a viewpoint.
