Southbank Marina

Southbank Marina is located on the Forth and Clyde Canal, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) southwest of the centre of Kirkintilloch in East Dunbartonshire. Opened in 2008, the marina provides berths for 40 boats, with associated commercial development which represents the revitalisation of a former industrial site. In 1826, this became the terminal for the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway which brought coal from Lanarkshire mines to be transported on the canal. There was an iron-works here and a nickel-works nearby by the end of the 19th C. Peter McGregor's & Sons boatyard operated here between 1902 and 1921 building puffers and scows to be dispatched around the world.

A small campus of New College Lanarkshire is based here and the marina provides a focus for the annual Kirkintilloch Canal Festival. A modern foot-bridge sweeps across the canal to the town centre.
