Stable Hill

The central part of a substantial drumlin in The Machars of Dumfries and Galloway, Stable Hill rises to just beyond 55m (180 feet) on the right bank of the River Bladnoch, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) west of Wigtown. Stable Hill is recorded as House Hill on Ordnance Survey maps dating before the mid-20th C., a name now applied to the hill a half-mile (0.7 km) to the northwest, formerly called Mill Hill. This is one of a number of drumlins hereabouts, aligned NE-SW indicating the direction of ice flow within an ancient glacier.
