Doon Hill

An elongated hogback in The Machars of Dumfries and Galloway, Doon Hill reaches a height of 60m (196 feet) 1¼ miles (2.1 km) west of Sorbie. An earthwork on its summit comprises two concentric ramparts with a ditch between is said to have surrounded an ancient settlement but has been much damaged by cultivation. The hill is one of a number of drumlins in this area, aligned NE-SW suggesting the direction of flow of an ancient ice sheet which once covered this area. There are other summits named Doon Hill nearby, the nearest being 8 miles (13 km) to the north northwest.
