Kiln Knowe

A hill in the S Scottish Borders, Kiln Knowe rises within plantation forest to 430m (1410 feet), a mile (1.5 km) northeast of Whitrope. Its summit is marked by an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar. Limestone was quarried from Stobs Quarry on its western slopes in the 19th C. and burned on site in kilns to create agricultural lime which was exported via a road to the west. Quarrying had ceased by the beginning of the 20th C.
