Broch of West Burrafirth

The Broch of West Burrafirth is a ruined Iron-Age fortification on the Holm of Hebrista at the head of West Burra Firth in Shetland, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) north of the settlement of West Burrafirth. Dating from early in the 1st C. AD, much of the structure of the broch can still be observed, although details are obscured by fallen material. The collapsed walls are up to 4.5m (15 feet) in thickness but still stand eight or nine courses high in places. The entrance is blocked with stones but a lintel is still extant. There appear to be two guard cells on either side of the entrance passage, with further cells within the structure.
