Stromness Academy

A local authority non-denominational six-year secondary school in Stromness (Orkney), Stromness Academy serves the west of the Orkney Mainland, working alongside Kirkwall Grammar School which serves the east. The school has a roll of 352 pupils (2015) the majority of whom are brought from villages and rural areas by a network of school buses.

The school was founded in the 1870s in the town centre but was rebuilt on its current site on the outskirts of the town, opening on 11th September 1990. It was extended in 2009 with a new Music Department added and again in the following year with new administration, guidance and physical education facilities. Designation as a Community School ensures amenities such as the games hall, the sports pitch, gymnasium, fitness suite, theatre, dark-room and music rooms are available for use by the local community.

The former town-centre building remains and serves as the Old Academy Business Centre.
