Meadowbank

A small district in NE Edinburgh, Meadowbank is located around London Road, to the north of Holyrood Park, 1¼ miles (2 km) east of the city centre. It is noted for Meadowbank Stadium, a sports centre which is the largest in the city. This was built for the 1970 Commonwealth Games and used again as the principal venue when the Games returned to Edinburgh in 1986, it regularly hosts sporting events at international level. On the north side of Meadowbank Terrace are a pair of gate piers which represent the entrance to the Queen's Station, a private halt on the East Coast Main Line built c.1850 to allow Queen Victoria an easy carriage drive through Holyrood Park to the Palace of Holyroodhouse without the need to pass through the congested Old Town.
