Normandykes Roman Camp

Normandykes is a temporary Roman marching camp situated on the eastern end of a low hill on the north bank of the River Dee in the westernmost extremity of Aberdeen City, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) southeast of Coalford and a mile (1.6 km) southwest of Peterculter. Dating from the late 2nd or early 3rd C., the rectangular site is substantial in size, measuring approximately 895m (2936 feet) west-east by 510m (1673 feet) north-south. It was once surrounded by an earthen bank (mostly lost) which enclosed an area of 44.3ha (109 acres). Although identified as Roman in the early 19th C., this was confirmed when the site was formally excavated in 1935 and 1971. Six gates are suggested but the interior is featureless.

Peterculter Golf Course lies to the east.
