Dolphin House

With a fine Georgian classical facade on Hunter Square in the Old Town of Edinburgh, Dolphin House was built 1788-90 by John Baxter as the home of the Edinburgh Merchants' Company and used by them until they moved to a grander Merchants' Hall on Hanover Street in 1879. The facade features fluted pilasters and large first-floor windows bringing light into a space which once formed the meeting room for the merchants. The building was A-listed in 1970 for its architectural and historical importance however, following time as a bank, it had fallen into disrepair. In 1991, Dolphin House was bought by the EDI Group, the arms-length development company owned by the City of Edinburgh Council which went on to develop Edinburgh Park and redevelop Craigmillar. Following an extensive and sympathetic restoration by architects Gray, Marshall & Associates the building now forms EDI group's headquarters, together with restaurants on the ground floor.
