Spectacle Loch

(Spectacle Lochs)

Spectacle Loch (or sometimes the Spectacle Lochs) represents a pair of connected lochans, located just to the south of the B7027 road in the Penninghame Forest of NW Dumfries and Galloway. It gains its name from its similarity, on a map, to a pair of spectacles. The western section of the loch is smaller, only 1 ha (2.5 acres) compared to the eastern section which extends to 3 ha (7.4 acres).
The loch supports a recreational course fishery, which is managed by the Forest Commission. Pike and perch are native, while other species including roach, rudd and tench were most-likely introduced. The largest tench caught in Scotland was recorded here.
