Chatelherault Railway Station

(Chatelheraut, Ferniegair Railway Station)

Chatelherault Railway Station (referred to in Gaelic as Chatelheraut) is a halt on the Larkhall Line, lying immediately to the west of Allanton and a quarter-mile (0.4 km) southeast of Ferniegair in South Lanarkshire. This station was opened by the Caledonian Railway in 1866 and was originally known as Ferniegair Railway Station. However it closed in 1917, although the line remained open for another 50 years. The line was relaid and a new station built, which opened in 2005. Now operated by ScotRail, Chatelherault Railway Station is unstaffed and comprises a solitary platform on a single-track line although there is a passing loop nearby. The station was used by 49,830 passengers per annum in 2009-10, but usage had grown markedly to 85,898 by 2015-16. It is preceded by Merryton Railway Station, 1½ miles (2.5 km) to the southeast, and followed by Hamilton Central, a similar distance to the west northwest.
