Hamilton Central Station

A railway station which serves as a transport interchange, Hamilton Central (referred to in Gaelic as Hamaltan Mheadhain) lies next to bus station in the centre of Hamilton in South Lanarkshire.

Opened in 1876 on the Hamilton Branch of the Clydesdale Junction Railway, which was owned by the Caledonian Railway Company, this station was once much larger with four lines, a turntable, and goods sidings and a shed to the north, where the bus station is now located. The flat-roofed station building dates from the 1980s.

The station now has two platforms linked by an overbridge and lies on the Hamilton Circle Line, which is part of the Argyle Line suburban rail network. It is preceded by Hamilton West, a half-mile (1 km) to the northwest, and followed by Airbles Railway Station, 2 miles (3 km) to the east northeast or Chatelherault, 1½ miles (2.5 km) east southeast, on the Larkhall Line. Operated by ScotRail and staffed part-time, it was used by 847,484 passengers per annum in 2016-17.
