A busy modern halt on the East Coast Main Line in East Lothian, Musselburgh Railway Station (Gael: Baile nam Feusgan) opened in 1988, a mile (1.8 km) southwest of the town centre and a half-mile (1 km) east of Newcraighall. Queen Margaret University lies immediately to the south. Musselburgh's original railway station lay a half-mile (1 km) to the northeast, nearer the town centre, the terminus of a branch which was built in 1847. This closed in the late 1960s.
The modern station is operated by ScotRail, is unstaffed and serves trains connecting Edinburgh with Dunbar and North Berwick. It is used by more than 450,000 passengers per annum (2015). Musselburgh is preceded by Wallyford Railway Station, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the east, and followed by Edinburgh Waverley, 4½ miles (7 km) to the west northwest.
