Newtonmore Railway Station

(Baile Ùr an t-Slèibh)

A railway station in Highland Council Area, Newtonmore (Gael: Baile Ùr an t-Slèibh) is located on the Highland Line, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) south of Newtonmore. A station opened here on Inverness & Perth Junction Railway in 1863 but the original buildings were destroyed by fire in 1893 and rebuilt by its successor, the Highland Railway. The following year, a passenger train collided with a goods train, killing one person and badly injured several others. The buildings are now in private hands, replaced by a simple passenger shelter. The station is now operated by ScotRail. Although built with two platforms, only one remains in use. It is unstaffed and is used by only 8770 passengers in 2016-17. It is preceded by Dalwhinnie Railway Station, 10 miles (16 km) to the south southwest, and followed by Kingussie, 2¾ miles (4.5 km) to the east northeast.
