Whifflet Line

(Whifflet Railway Line)

A suburban railway serving the east of the Greater Glasgow conurbation, the Whifflet Line extends for 11 miles (18 km) linking Glasgow Central Railway Station with Whifflet Railway Station in Coatbridge (North Lanarkshire). It opened in 1865 as the Rutherglen & Coatbridge Railway and has been in continuous use, although was closed to passenger services and lost its stations between 1966 and 1993. The other lines in the vicinity having been electrified many years before, this line followed in 2014 at a cost of £29.6 million. This allowed the Whifflet Line to be designated as a section of the Argyle Line, with new services continuing via the Low Level Station at Glasgow Central through the city's western suburbs and north to Milngavie. Fifty trains operate per day between Glasgow Central and Whifflet, with average journey times of forty minutes and the fastest train taking just twenty-eight minutes. There are five intermediate stations; namely Carmyle, Mount Vernon, Baillieston, Bargeddie and Kirkwood.
