Fairfield

A ward within Govan (Glasgow City), Fairfield takes is name from the Fairfield Estate, centred on Fairfield House. Fairfield Farm Cottage (early 19th C) still remains within Elder Park. In 1864, the riverside section of this estate began to be developed as a shipbuilding yard (Fairfield Works) by the Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Company, which became one of the most significant shipyards in the world. Their A-listed headquarters and drawing office has been converted into office space and the Fairfield Heritage Centre by Govan Workspace, a community-based social enterprise. The shipyard was amalgamated into Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1968, nationalised in 1977 and eventually sold to the Norwegian Kvaerner group in 1988. Today, it remains open and is operated by BAE Systems, with much of its business comprising ships for the Royal Navy.
