Nether Dechmont

(The Riggs)

A northern district of Livingston in West Lothian, Nether Dechmont is situated between Deans and Knightsridge, 2 miles / 3 km northwest of Almondvale. Nether Dechmont merges with Carmondean. Developed in the 1970s, it takes its name from a farm steading which now, confusingly, forms Carmondean Community Centre. This centre is home to Livingston United Parish Church, at the centre of a unique ecumenical experiment whereby the Church of Scotland, the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Methodist Church and the United Reformed Church all worship together. Most housing here was built by the Livingston Development Corporation for rent but an amount has been sold to tenants. Today, social housing extends to 142 homes for rent, now owned and managed by West Lothian Council. Nether Dechmont Cottages comprise seventeen single-storey houses, completed in 1984, which are owned by the Margaret Blackwood Housing Association and rented to those with limited mobility.

The surrounding street names provide a further alternative name for the district; The Riggs, with Raeburn Rigg, Camps Rigg and Fells Rigg having names which relate to productive seams of oil-shale that were mined in this area.
