The Kirkcaldy Centre is an indoor shopping centre situated in the town centre, immediately to the north of Kirkcaldy Bus Station. On the roof of the centre is a 300-space car park. It opened as the Postings Shopping Centre in 1981, built at a cost of £4.25 million. The centre extends to 7490 sq. m (80,620 sq. feet), with individual retail units ranging in size from 65 sq. m (700 sq. feet) up to 4938 sq. m (53,155 sq. feet).
The arrival of each store prompted local news and the former Dundee-based supermarket chain William Low had the largest unit which was opened by television celebrity Isla St. Clair (b.1952). William Low was bought by Tesco in 1994, but the supermarket (incorporating the town's main post office) remained open until 2015. The Centre proved popular through the 1990s but entered a decline thereafter, with shops closing, including the anchor stores, and costs increased. By 2019, fourteen of its twenty-one shops lay vacant and the Centre became the embodiment of a declining in-town retail sector when it was sold at auction by its owner of 15-years, Columbia Threadneedle Investments, with a reserve price of just £1. The eventual selling price was a modest £310,000. Thereafter the centre was rebranded and refurbished by new owners Wakefield-based Evergold Property.
