A sizeable quarry which scars the landscape to the north of the M8 Motorway in North Lanarkshire, Duntilland Quarry lies opposite Kirk o' Shotts and a mile (1.8 km) east northeast of Salsburgh. It began as a modest quarry in the mid-20th C. which cut into crags on the southern edge of a microgabbro sill of Carboniferous age, known colloquially as whinstone. This is an igneous rock injected between existing sedimentary rocks. The site includes settling ponds which prevent the pollution of local watercourses. This is the largest of several substantial quarries in this area which produce aggregate for the building industry. Duntilland Quarry is operated by Aggregate Industries (2019).
