Singing Sands


(Traigh Bhan, Tràigh Bhàn)

A beautiful sandy beach in the S of the island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, the Singing Sands, or Traigh Bhan, lie a quarter-mile (0.4 km) southwest of Port Ellen Lighthouse on Carraig Fhada. The sands are said to 'sing' underfoot under certain conditions, a phenomenon that is reportedly due to the size of the sand grains and the water content water content of the sand.
