Samson's Ribs

A substantial rock outcrop between the upper and lower sections of the Queen's Drive in Holyrood Park (Edinburgh), Samson's Ribs lie between Pollock Halls of Residence and Duddingston Loch. They represent a section of columnar basalt, which cooled slowly in Carboniferous times associated with the Arthur's Seat volcanic complex. These hexagonally-jointed columns slope to the south.
