Meadowmill Sport Centre

(East Lothian Athletics Arena)

A large multi-sport facility built on the site of a former coal mine in East Lothian, Meadowmill Sport Centre lies a half-mile (1 km) southeast of Prestonpans. Opened in 1980, it comprises four separate facilities located on the same site; namely the East Lothian Athletics Arena, an indoor sports hall, outdoor pitches and a performance gym. It was built on the edge of the site of the former Bankton Colliery, there was an associated coal-washing plant here, together with the short-lived Meadowmill Mine.

The sports hall provides facilities for badminton, bowling, tennis, basketball, football and cricket, amongst others. Outdoors there are three full-size grass football pitches, a further three small pitches for seven-a-side football, two rugby pitches and a floodlit synthetic pitch for hockey and football. The Athletics Arena includes a 400m six-lane polymeric athletics track, a 100m eight-lane sprint track, areas for hammer, discus, javelin, shot putt, high jump and long jump, together with a stand for spectators. There is also a Fitness Assessment and Sports Injury Centre.

For many years in the 1980s, Meadowmill was the location of East Lothian Highland Games, which attracted several thousand spectators. In 1995, more than 10,000 people attended a re-enactment of the Battle of Prestonpans, celebrating its 250th anniversary. There is also an annual dog show held here.

Meadowmill is now run by Enjoy East Lothian, an arms-length company with charitable status which delivers sports and leisure services on behalf of East Lothian Council.
