Lamb Isle

A small low-lying wooded riverine island lying within the River Dee in Dumfries and Galloway, Lamb Isle lies a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northeast of Bridge of Dee and extends to 1.6 ha (4 acres). The island once provided a bridge connecting a pair of girder viaducts which carried the Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright Branch of the Glasgow and Southwestern Railway over the Dee. Built in 1864, the line closed in 1965 and the western viaduct was demolished soon after, although the eastern viaduct still remains providing access to the island.
