A much altered bridge which crosses the River North Esk on the southern margin of Penicuik in Midlothian. Opened in 1812 in association with the completion of the Edinburgh to Peebles turnpike road, it was the work of noted engineer Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834). It was the scene of a fatal accident in 1919 when a lorry crashed through the parapet and landed in the river, killing the diver and passenger. The bridge was widened in 1931, leaving the old bridge sandwiched between a pair of reinforced concrete spans. The northernmost arch once covered a branch of the Penicuik Railway which led from Valleyfield Mill to Bank Mill, replaced with a road link when the railway closed. Although the mills have closed, this link still provides access to industrial buildings on the banks of North Esk to the west.
