The Macquarie Mausoleum

A modest mausoleum near Gruline on the Island of Mull, the Macquarie Mausoleum is the burial place of Major General Lachlan Macquarie of Ulva (1761 - 1824), the first Governor of New South Wales and 'Father of Australia'. The site was chosen by Macquarie himself but the mausoleum was built by local landowners in 1851.

Set within a circular lawn surrounded by a wall, the mausoleum is a gable-ended ashlar structure with two inscribed marble panels sealing its entrances. Neglected for many years, it was gifted to the people of New South Wales in 1948 by Lady Yarborough, the owner of the Gruline Estate on which the mausoleum stands, and which was once part of Macquarie's Jarvisfield Estate. The tomb was repaired in 1957 and is now maintained by the National Trust for Scotland on behalf of the National Trust of Australia.
