The Peel

The Peel is one of only two Royal Parks in Scotland. It surrounds Linlithgow Palace (West Lothian) and extends to the edge of Linlithgow Loch. The Peel, along with the Palace, are maintained by Historic Environment Scotland. The other Scottish Royal Park is Holyrood Park in Edinburgh. The name originates from a wooden fortification which was constructed by the English King Edward I when his army occupied Linlithgow in 1301-02. This fortification was said to have been captured by Robert the Bruce's guerillas, aided by a local farmer William Bunnock. Bunnock parked a wagon of hay in the entry gate, preventing the drawbridge from being raised and concealing a band of armed men who subdued the guard.
