Markinch is a parish, which lies in Fife Council Area, some 6 miles (9 km) north of Kirkcaldy and 9 miles (15 km) southwest of Cupar in Fife.
It is located in the old county of Fife, which disappeared following the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1974.
The parish has an area of 39.4 sq. km (15.2 sq. miles) and includes the settlement of Glenrothes. Markinch has 8 neighbouring parishes; namely Falkland, Kennoway, Kettle, Kinglassie, Kirkcaldy & Dysart, Leslie, Scoonie and Wemyss. The boundaries of this parish were modified among significant changes recommended by the Boundary Commissioners after the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889.
