Ecclesmachan is a small parish, which lies in West Lothian Council Area, some 3 miles (5 km) north of Livingston and 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Bathgate in West Lothian.
It is located in the old county of West Lothian, which disappeared following the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1974.
The parish has an area of 16.4 sq. km (6.3 sq. miles). Ecclesmachan has 6 neighbouring parishes; namely Abercorn, Bathgate, Kirkliston, Linlithgow, Livingston and Uphall. The boundaries of this parish were modified among significant changes recommended by the Boundary Commissioners after the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889.
