Richardson played the Edinburgh surgeon Dr Joseph Bell (1837 - 1911) in the Murder Rooms television mysteries (2000-01), tracing the fictional experiences of Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930) with his real-life medical-school mentor.
