Mark Kerr


(Lord Newbattle; 1st Earl of Lothian)

c.1553 - 1609

Noble. His father was the last abbot of Newbattle Abbey (Midlothian) who became a Protestant during the Reformation and was therefore able to retain the abbey's land and also to marry. Kerr was created Lord Newbattle (1596) and Earl of Lothian (1606). He built a house on the remains of the abbey, which was owned by his descendants until the 1930s. His eldest daughter, Isobel, married the 1st Earl of Queensberry (1603).
