Agnes Broun

1732 - 1820

Mother of Robert Burns (1759-96). Broun was born on a farm near Kirkoswald (South Ayrshire). Her mother died when she was just ten and Agnes became responsible for her younger siblings. When her father remarried, she was sent to live with her grandmother in Maybole. She married William Burnes in 1757, and Robert was the eldest of their seven children.

Agnes moved to East Lothian to live with her younger son Gilbert (1760 - 1827), who resided at Grant's Braes near Bolton. Here she died at the grand age of 88. She is remembered by a monument at the well where she used to draw water, some 1 mile (2 km) north of Bolton.
