James Bell


1769 - 1833

Geographer. Born in Jedburgh, Bell was the son of a minister, who later moved his family to Glasgow. He made noted contributions to various works on geography including a Glasgow Geography (1815), history and linguistics. His System of Geography: Popular and Scientific (1832) proved popular and was later republished in America.

He retired to Campsie (East Dunbartonshire), where he died and lies buried in the Old Kirkyard.
