Architect. Born the son of an Edinburgh tradesman in Royal service, Murray became an architect of some influence. He served as Master of Works to King James VI. His works include the north quarter of Linlithgow Palace, additions to the Great Hall at Edinburgh Castle, the design of Parliament House and the reconstruction of Holyrood Abbey for the coronation of King Charles I (1633). Murray's work must have pleased his king because he was knighted by Charles in the same year. He may also have had some influence on Heriot's Hospital (from 1628). His houses include Winton (1620-7), Pitreavie (1630) and Baberton (originally Kilbaberton; from 1633).
