John Stuart

(Earl of Mar)

c.1458 - 1479

Noble. Third son of King James II (1430-60), Stuart was the younger brother of Alexander Stuart, Duke of Albany (1454-85) and King James III (1452-88). He fell foul of his eldest brother, who distrusted the traditional nobility and particularly wished to prevent any challenge from his brothers. In 1479, Stuart was imprisoned with Albany in Edinburgh Castle and he died there.
