Thomas Binnie


1792 - 1867

Builder, property developer and philanthropist. Born at Nether Lauchope, between Holytown and Chapelhall in North Lanarkshire, Binnie was responsible for much of the building work that led to the developments of the Hutchesontown and Laurieston areas of the Gorbals and in the east end of Glasgow.

He was known as a philanthropist, giving generously to the church and was involved in schemes for temperance and black emancipation.
