Isabella Elder

(Isabella Ure)

1828 - 1905

Philanthropist. Born Isabella Ure, the daughter of a solicitor, in 1857 she married the Govan ship-builder John Elder (1824-69). Mrs Elder gave considerable sums to the benefit of education, establishing the Queen Margaret College for the education of women and contributing significantly to its annual running costs. She also funded a Chair in Naval Architecture at the University of Glasgow in memory of her husband and played a role in persuading that university to allow women to study. She bought and laid out Elder Park in Govan, which included a statue of her late husband, and helped create both a library and a hospital in the town.
