Robert Balfour


c.1550 - 1625

Philosopher and linguist. Born in Angus, Balfour studied at the Universities of St. Andrews and Paris. He became Professor of Greek at the College of Guienne in Bordeaux (France) and, in 1586, was appointed its Principal. A respected teacher, he was an effective linguist in Greek and Latin as well as a noted mathematician. His great work was his commentary on Aristotle, Commentarii in Organum Logicum Aristotelis, published in Bordeaux in 1618.
