Cardinal Keith Michael Patrick O'Brien


1938 - 2018

Cardinal. Born in Ballycastle (Northern Ireland) but raised in Clydebank and Edinburgh, O'Brien attended St Patrick's High School in Dumbarton and studied chemistry and then education at the University of Edinburgh. He trained as a priest at St. Andrew's College, Drygrange, in the Scottish Borders, and was ordained in 1965. He was appointed Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh in 1985 and a Cardinal in 2003, with his residence at St. Bennet's in the Morningside district of Edinburgh. O'Brien resigned shortly before his official retirement having been subject to allegations of sexual impropriety. He died in Newcastle and lies buried next to his parents in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Edinburgh.
