Admiral Sir George Johnstone Hope


1767 - 1818

Naval commander. Grandson of Charles Hope, the 1st Earl of Hopetoun (1681 - 1742), Hope joined the navy and commanded HMS Defence at the Battle of Trafalgar. He rose to become Commander-in-Chief of the British Baltic Fleet during the Napoleonic Wars.

He lived at Carriden House, by Bo'ness, and married his cousin Lady Jemima Hope, the daughter of James Hope-Johnstone, the 3rd Earl of Hopetoun (1741 - 1817). Their son was another noted admiral, Sir James Hope (1808-81).
