John Fraser


1750 - 1811

Plant hunter. Born in Inverness, Fraser moved to London where he began a drapery business near Chelsea Physic Garden. Through friendship with William Forsyth (1737 - 1804) he developed an interest in plants. He made several journeys to North America beginning in 1780. He was appointed botanical collector by the Czar of Russia.

Fraser was responsible for collecting species of Hydrangea, Pieris and Rhododendron. He is remembered at the Scottish Plant Hunter's Garden in Pitlochry and also in the names of the Fraser Fir (Abies fraserii), Ficus fraserii and Magnolia fraserii.
