Merchant, who became Lord Provost of Glasgow. Born on a farm near Port of Menteith (Stirling), Campbell came to Glasgow where he worked in the clothing trade. He joined his younger brother William Campbell (1793 - 1864) in establishing the firm of J. & W. Campbell in 1817, which sold drapery from premises on the Saltmarket. Later, he entered politics standing unsuccessfully for Parliament, but served as Lord Provost of Glasgow between 1840 and 1843. He developed Princes Square off Buchanan Street around the same time. Campbell was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1842.
He lived at Kelvinside House (North Kelvinside) but bought the Stracathro Estate in Angus in 1847, where he died. His sons included the politician Sir James Campbell (1825 - 1908) and the Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman (1836 - 1908).
