William Gillies


(Liam Mac Gille Iosa)

1865 - 1932

Nationalist. Born in Galloway, the son of a merchant, Gillies was raised in London. An enthusiast for the Gaelic language, Gillies supported the cause of land rights for the Highland crofter. He was an enthusiast for home rule for Scotland and, in 1921, was a founder of the Scots National League, which later became the Scottish National Party. He was also a supporter of Irish Nationalism.

His grand-daughter is singer and nationalist Anne Lorne Gillies (b.1944).
