Daniel Stewart

1741 - 1814

Philanthropist. Born into a poor farming family at Logierait (Perth and Kinross), Stewart came to Edinburgh where he found work as a wig-maker's apprentice. He progressed to become an officer of the Court of Exchequer. Through careful investment he amassed a fortune and on his death left this in trust to the Merchant Company of Edinburgh to found a school for orphan and destitute boys. This was Daniel Stewart's College, which through merger became Stewart's Melville College in 1972.
