First Captain of the Cutty Sark. Born in East Wemyss, he studied navigation in Dundee and signed on a ship importing flax for the linen industry. He was awarded his Master's Certificate after seven years and gained a reputation as a competent and conscientious captain who didn't take risks and was therefore likely to bring the cargo safely to port. He worked for ship-owner Jock Willis and became one of Willis' most experienced captains. As such, Moodie was asked to supervise the building of Willis' latest ship, the tea-clipper Cutty Sark, in Dumbarton. Moodie is said to have demanded the best quality materials be used in her construction. The Cutty Sark was launched by Moodie's wife in November 1869 and he became her first Captain, sailing between London and Shanghai (China) for three years. In 1872, Moodie moved on to steam-ships serving crossing the Atlantic for 19 years.
Moodie retired to Methil in 1891, where he is remembered for founding the local bowling club. He moved to Auchtermuchty in 1911. He lies buried in Methilmill Cemetery.
