Kirstin Linklater


1936 -

Voice coach. Linklater was born in Orkney, the daughter of author Eric Linklater (1899 - 1974), and brought up in Nigg (Easter Ross). She trained as an actor at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where she went on to teach for several years. Moving to the USA in 1963, Linklater specialised in voice training and wrote two notable books on the subject Freeing the Natural Voice (1976) and Freeing Shakespeare's Voice (1992). In 1997, she was appointed as Professor of Theatre Arts at Columbia University in New York. Having trained several well-known actors, including Bill Murray, Patrick Stewart, Donald Sutherland and Sigourney Weaver, Linklater has gone on to establish an international network of professionals trained in her methods.
