Robert Methven Heron

1833 - 1906

Potter. Born into a family of potters, his parents had bought the Fife Pottery in Kirkcaldy in 1837. Heron travelled around Europe seeking new designs and brought the Czech designer Karel Nekola (1857 - 1915) to Scotland to produce the distinctive pottery which became known as Wemyss Ware. The pottery gained its name having achieved the patronage of Dora Erskine-Wemyss - Lady Grosvenor (1856-94) - who lived at nearby Wemyss Castle. The distinctive colourful and informal designs were produced from 1882 until 1928, when the business failed a casualty of the Great Depression. The pottery is now greatly valued and reaches considerable prices at auction.
