Daniel Lizars

1793 - 1875

Engraver, printer and publisher. Born in Edinburgh, the son of Daniel Lizars (1754 - 1812) and younger brother of William Home Lizars (1788 - 1859). After the death of his father, Lizars continued his father's engraving and printing business with his brother until its bankruptcy in 1832. He emigrated with his family to Upper Canada the following year and settled in Colborne Township (Goderich) on Lake Huron. He briefly returned to Scotland in 1845.

He is best remembered for his substantial library, a unique Scots-Canadian collection extending to more than 650 volumes, which was acquired by the McLaughlin Library of the University of Guelph in 1982.
